Youmust use the EH pumpwith asuitable backing pump. The EH pumps can operate with amaximum continuous inlet pressureof 1000 mbar. You can achieve low system pressures by the use of two or more EH pumps inseries.The EH pump coupling-cover is connected to the pump outlet and forms an integral part of thevacuum system. The connecting lines have a filter which removes debris and so preventscontamination of the lubricating oil and bearings. For an even cleaner system, you can evacuatethe coupling-cover and bearings by connection to the pump-inlet or to an external vacuumpump.The hydrocarbon safe area and chemical EHpumps use hydrocarbon oils, such asUltragrade 20.Versions of the safe area pumps for usewith PFPE (perfluoropolyether) oils are also available forvacuum systems in which oxygen or other reactive or corrosive gases are pumped.All the EH pumps have ISO inlet-flange and outlet-flange connections. EH Mechanical Booster Pumps 1 1.3 General constructionTheEHpumps arepositive displacement Roots vacuumpumps. An oil-filler connection is provided and you can inspectthe oil-level through a sight-glass fitted to the gear-cover. 1.4 'C' model chemical EH pumps 1.4.1 Flameproof motorsThe EH1200C, EH2600C and EH4200C chemical pumps are all fitted with flameproof motors: Pumps suitable for 50 Hz operation are fitted with a flameproof motor approved to EEx d, Gas Group IIA, IIB, Temperature Class T4. You can connect a suitable purge gas supply to this connector, to provide for coupling-cover purge with nitrogen at positive pressure. The pump is a three-stage, positive disp lacement rotary pump in which pairs of interm eshing rotors (mounted on common shafts ) are held in correct phase relation by a pair of timi ng-gears. The timing-gears and the adjacent double-row angular contact ball bearings are oil lubricated. The pump has lifti ng-bolts (5) and is mounted on a ro bust fr ame (9). Fixing holes (8) in the frame can be used to secure the pump frame in i ts operating p osition. The pump has a shaft-seals p urge system and a gas -ballast system. You can connect a dry comp ressed air sup ply to the shaft-se als purge inlet (22). The sh aft-seal s purge pipeline then delivers the dry air purge t o the shaft-s eals. This dr y air purge: ens ures that th e shaft-seals are maintai ned at a positive pressure during pump operation; prevents the en try of corrosive or toxic proc ess vapours into the pump gearbox; prevents contamination of the process gases by p ump oil; prev ents damage to the sha ft-seals b y debris. As supplied, the gas -ballast system can deliver ambient air to the pump gas-ballast inlet. The air-flow is filtered and is controlled by a valve (10). A check -valve ( Figure 7, item 10) prevents the escape of process ga ses out of the gas- ballast system into the local atmo sphere. The pump-motor (16) is air-cooled by an integral c ooling-fan (19). A thermal snap-switch box (4) is fitted to the pump-body. The snap-switch box has two thermal snap-switche s: z The output of the wa rning thermal snap-switch will go open circuit whe n the temperature of the pump-body is higher than normal. Use this output to provide a warnin g of high pump temperature.Use th is output to shut-down the pump when it is too hot. 1.5 Interstage relief valve The pump has an interstage relief valve (12) fitted in a pi pe between the pump-outlet and the last st age of the pump. The valve is normally held closed by its own weight, bu t opens depen ding on the pump-inlet pressure, as follow s: z At pump-inlet pressures of 30 0 mbar (3 x 10 4 P a, 225 T orr) and above on the GV250, and at pump -inlet pressures of 200 mba r (2.0 x 10 4 P a, 150 T orr) and above on the GV400, the interstage pres sure forces the valve open. This allows process gases to p ass directly from the se cond stage i nto the pump-o utlet, withou t compression in the third sta ge of the pump.P rocess gases pa ss through all stages of the pu mp; that is, the process gases are compre ssed in the third stage before t hey pass into the pump-outlet. The interstage relief valve allows the pump to provide a constant pump ing spee d from atmo sp heric pressure down t o 1 0 m b a r ( 1 x 1 0 3 Pa, 7.5 Torr) and also prevents excessive electr ical po wer consum ption by t he pump-m otor when the pump starts. 1.6 Drive oper ation The pump has a f lexible drive co upling which tr ansmits the drive from the p ump-motor (16) t o the pump rotors. Refer to Figure 12. A coupling hub (14) is fitted to the pump shaf t (9) and a drive hub (16) is fitted to the motor shaft (18). A coupling insert (15) fits between the coupling and drive hubs. Introduction The drive hub incorp orates a number of drille d holes. With a coupling cover (12) removed, you can fit a s teel rod (or other suitable tool) to one of these h o les, and you can then manually turn the drive shaft, and so turn the pump. This facility is useful if, for example, you need to drai n fluid from the pump following a hydrau lic lock (see Table 16 ). 1.7 Liquid pumping capability The GV pump ca n survive the in gress of some liquid (after a process failure condition, for example) withou t damage, however the pump is not suitable for continuous pu mping of liquids. If you want to continuously pump a liq uid stream, contact your supplier or Ed wards for advice. 1.8 Safe area oper ation You must not use the GV pump in the following hazardous are as: z Zone 0, Zone 1 or Zo ne 2 (gases), or Zone Z (10) or Zo ne Y (11) (dusts), as classifi ed by Euro pean authoritie s. z Division 1 or Division 2 (gases a nd dusts), as classified by North American authorities. These hazardous areas requi re the use of flameproof equi pmen t. If you need a pump which can operate in these areas, con tact you r supplie r or Edwards for advice. 1.9 Accessories A number of accessories are av ailab le for the GV pumps; use these to conf igure the pump for specific applicati ons. These accessories are listed in Section 7.4. Installation A705-61-88 0 Issue K 3 Installation 3.1 Safety z A suitably trained and supervise d technician must install the pump.Dismantl e and clean con taminate d component s inside a fum e-cupboard.If you do not, you can cause injury to peop le and dama ge to equipment. If you do not, there will be a risk of emission of hazardous gases. WARNING When the pump is switched off, gas will fl ow in reverse direction through the pump and there will be a rapid pressure ri se in the inlet pip eline and your process system. If this will cause a dangerous situation (or if it will adversely affect your proc ess), you mu st incorporate sui table devices (such as a fast-acting inlet isolati on- valve or an outlet ch eck-val ve) in your s ystem pipelines. Installation When you design your system, take note of the following: z Y ou must be able to isolate the pump from the a tmosphe re and from your process system if you have pumped or produc ed danger ous chemica ls z On very dusty applications, incorporate an inlet filte r in the inlet pipeline, to minimise the in gress of dust into the pump z T o get the best pumping speed, ensure that the pipeline which connects the process system to the pump is as short as p ossible and h as an inte rnal diamet er not less than the pum p-inlet.If the pressure in the pipeline is higher than this pressure, th e pump will o perate at a hi gh temperat ure and may t rip because o f excessive electrical current consumption.If necessary, contact Edwards or yo ur supplier for advice on inlet isolation-valves, ou tlet check-v alves or othe r components suitable for your application and system design. 3.3 Unpack and inspect 1. Use a fork-lift truck or a pall et truck to place the pallet in a convenient position. 2. R emov e the cardbo ard sleeve which covers the pump, then remove th e protective foil bag from aro und the pump. 3. Inspect th e equipment. If the pump or any of the other it ems is damaged, notify your suppli er and the carrier in writing wi thin three days; stat e the Item N umber of the pump together with your order number and your supplier ’ s invoice number. R etain all packing materials for inspection. Do not use the pump if it is damaged. 4. Check that you h a ve received the items listed in Ta b l e 1 1. If any of the se items is mi ssing, noti fy your supp lier in writing wi thin three days. 5. If the pump is not to be used i m mediately, replace the packing materials. Store the pump i n suitable conditions as describe d in Section 6.1. WARNING Incorporate safety devices to p revent operatio n of the pu mp when th e exhaust pipeline is restricted or blocked. If you do not, the ex haust pipeline may become over-pressurised and may burs t. WARNING Use suitable lifting equipment to move the pump. If you do not, yo u can injure yourself or damage the pump. Refer to Section 2.3 for the mass of the pump.Page 13 Edwards and th e Edwards logo are tradem arks of Ed wards Limited. Ensure that the cooling-air flow arou nd the pump-motor is not restricted. 1. R efe r to Figure 1. R emove from the fixing-holes (8) the four nuts and bolts which secure the pump frame (9) to the pallet. 2. Attach suitable lifting-eq uipment to the four li fting bolts (5) to move th e pump. 3. Locate the pump on a firm, level surface. Ensure that the surface is clean and free from debris and contamination (such as oil). 4. Use suitable bolts through th e four fixing-holes (8) to se cure the pump in p osition. 3.5 Check the gearbox oil-level Refer to Figure 1. T h e p u m p i s s u p p l i e d f i l l e d w i t h o i l. B e f o r e y o u operate the pump, check that the gea rbox oil-level is correct: the oil-level must be be tween the MIN and MAX mark s on the bezel of th e oil-level sight-gla ss (14): see detail C. If necessary, pour more oil into the gearbox: r efer to Section 5.3. 3.6 Electrical connections 3.6.1 Introduction Note: On 60 Hz pumps, yo u must make the wiring connections in the moto r in accordance with the US National Electrical code and with a pproved local and si te practices We recommend t hat you connect th e electrical supply to the pump -motor through a s uit able current monit or, and that you configure the high current setting on the curren t monitor to switch off the pump-motor at a suitable overload cur rent. This ov erload cur rent must not exceed the maximu m current ra ting shown on the rating pl ate on the pump-motor. Note that the gene ral procedur e to co nnect to the pump-m otor is given in Section 3.6.2. However, you must refer to the motor manual supplied with your pump for deta iled inst ru ctions on how to connect your ele ctrical supply to the pump-motor. WARNING Use suitable lifting equipment to move the pump. Refer to Section 2.3 for the mass of the pump. WARNING Ensure that the electrical insta llation of your pump conforms to your local and national safety requirements. It mu st be suitably co nnected to a fused and protected el ectrical supply and a suitable earth (ground) point. Edwards and the Edward s logo a re trademarks of Edwards Limited. Installation 3.6.2 Connect the electrical supply to the pump-motor Connect the electrical supp ly to the pump-motor as desc ribe d below. You m ust use a su itably sized supply cable. 1. R emov e the cover from the pump-mo tor terminal box. 2. R e move the plug from the cab le entry ho le in the term inal-box ( Figure 1, item 17) 3. Fit a suitable cable-gland and nut to the entry hole, then pass the supply cable through the cable-gla nd. The cable gland that yo u use must be ra ted to provid e seal protection IP55 (in IEC529 or NEMA MG1.pt.5 ). 4. Configure any links in the terminal box as neces sary, then connect the phase conductors and the earth (ground) wire to the terminals in the termin al-box: refer to the motor manual suppl ied with your pump or moto r nameplate. 5. If you will fit separate thermistor s cable c ontinue at Step 6 below, otherwise continue at Step 3 of Section 3.6.3. 6. T ighten the cable-gland nut strain-relie f screws 7. Installation 3.6.3 Connect the thermistor outputs The motor windings are fitted with thermistors, which are termi nated in the motor te rm inal-box. You must connect the thermistor outputs t o a suitable control circuit to is ola te the electr ical supp ly from the p ump-motor an d shut down the pump if the windings overheat. 1. R emov e the plug from one of the cable en tr y holes on the pump-motor ter minal box ( Figure 1, item 17). 2. Fit a suitable cable gland and nut to the entry hole, then pass your control cable through the cable-gla nd. The gland you u se must be ra ted to provid e seal prote cti on of IP55 (in IEC 529 or NE MA MG1.pt.5) or better to the terminal box. 3. Connect the wires in the control cable to the thermistor outpu t terminals in the te rm inal-box: refer to the motor manual supplied wi th your pump or motor nameplate. 4. T ig hten the cable-gl and nut strai n relief scre ws. 5. R efit and secure the terminal box cover. If you do not, you can damage the pump and there may be a risk of fire. WARNING Incorporate a manual reset device in your control equipment. If you do not (and a fault which causes the thermistors to shut down the pump is not corrected ), the pump will automatically switch on agai n when the motor win dings cool down. Installation 3.6.4 Connect to the t hermal snap-switche s CAUTION Ensure that you route the thermal snap -switch cable away from hot surfaces of the pu mp or o ther e quip ment. If you do not, the cable may be damaged. Connect the output of the warning thermal snap -switch to yo ur control equipment to prov ide an indication that the pump is too ho t. You must connect the outp ut of the shut-down ther mal snap-swi tch to the electrical-overl oad control-lo op of your contactor, so th at the contacto r will automati cally swi tch off the p ump if it is too hot: refer to Figure 3. The thermal sn ap-switches will reset (tha t is, close aga in) when t he pump cools d own to a pres et temperat ure (see Section 2.5 ). We theref ore recommend th at your contro l equipm ent incorporates a manual reset device so that the pump does not auto matically swit ch on again when it cools down. Use the following procedure to connect to th e thermal snap -switches. If you connect to the thermal snap-switches as described be low, the output from the therm al snap-switc hes will be normally clos ed and will open when the pump is too ho t. 1. R efe r to Figure 6 ( page 20 ). WARNING You must connect the sh ut-down thermal snap-switch so that the pump stops when the thermal snap-switch open s. If you do not, ther e may be a risk of fire or explosion. If you do not (and a fault which causes the sh ut-down ther mal snap-switch to open is not co rrected), the pump will automatically switch on again when it cools down. If you have started maintenance or fault finding on the pump, there will then be a risk of fire or explosion and injury to people. Undo and remove the four bolts w hich secure th e coupling cover (15) to the coupling housing, then remove the coupling cover. 2. R efe r to Figure 12. Look into the coupling housing (5) and watch the driv e hub (14), swi tch on the p ump for one or two seconds, then sw itch the pump off. 3. If the drive hub (14) does not rotate in the corr ect directio n (shown by an ar row on the pump-motor: Figure 1, item 18), the direction of rotation is incorrect. If the direction of rotation is incorrect: z Isolate the pump from the electrical supply.R efit the coupling cover (15) and secure with the four bolt s. T ighten the bolts to a torque between 3 and 5 Nm (2.2 and 3.7 lbf ft). 3.8 Fit a mechanical booster pump (optional) If you want to use a mechanica l booster pump with the GV pump, fit it now. Details of the con nection kits availabl e from Edwards are given in Section 7.4. Refer to the installation proc edures i n the instructi on manua l supplied wit h the connection kit. WARNING You must ensure that the direct ion of rotation of the pump is correct before you operate the pump. If you want to use indirect cooling on the GV pump, insta ll the appropriate Indirect Coo ling Kit (see Section 7.4 ) and connect to the cooling-water supply as described in th e instruction manu al supplied with th e Kit. Take note of the following whe n you connect the coo ling-water suppl y and retu rn pipelines: z If you need to connect more than one GV pum p to th e water supply, you must co nnect them in parallel and not in series.Connect the c ooling-water supply as descr ibed below; yo u must use.You must connect nitro gen supplies to the gas sy stems if you will pump da ngerous gas es.A s supplied, the gas-ballas t system can deliver filtered atmospheric a ir to the pump gas-ballast inlet, so you d o not need to connect an air supply to the gas- ballast system.Us e the pro cedures in Section 3.10.2 and 3.10.3 to connect nitrogen supplies to the shaft-seals purge inlet and to the gas-ballas t system. Installation 3.10.2 Connect the shaft-seals purge air or nitrogen supply CAUTION Your compressed air or nitro g en supply pressu re must comp ly with the requirements of Section 2.7. If it does not, the shaft-seals purge pipeline may become over-pressurised and the shaft-seals may fail. Note: Your compre ssed air or nitro gen gas supply must be clean and dry. We recommend th at you instal l suitable pres sure control dev ices, a pressu re gauge, and an au tomatically op erated isolatio n-valve in your compr essed air o r nitroge n supply conf igured so that: z The shaft-seals purge air or nitrogen supply is on whenever the pump is on.R emove the red blanking cap from the s haft-seals purge inlet (2 2). 2. Fit th e end of y our air or nit rogen supp ly pipeline to the shaf t-seals pur ge inlet c onnection (2 2), then tight en the nut to secure the pipeline in place. 3.10.3 Connect a nitrogen ga s-ballast supply (optional) Note: Ensure that the gas-ba llast nitrogen supply is clean and dry.
